Tavern is brand new! Please make your presence known so that others can find you.
If you do not see anyone to play with yet, know that your public listings will remain active so long as you log-in at least every three months. If anyone sees your listing and replies, you'll get a notification on your phone letting you know you have a new message. It takes almost no effort to find your new game group!
Tavern User Guide
Tavern is designed to help you find a game! Whether it's a one-off, or a party that you might play with for years to come, Tavern's here to help.
There are four user types.
As an individual you can find others who share a similar interest and organize games.
You may also create a listing as a party looking to add people to your existing game.
As a club you can share your larger group's interest with the public.
And as a local game store you can share your brick & mortar store's presence and offerings with those in your area.
Tavern is solely designed for local gamers to find one-another for face-to-face games. There is no functionality for finding people to play with online.
Tavern is completely free for all users.
Individuals
Your individual account is invisible unless you make it public. Make it public through the public/private toggle on your profile. It will remain visible so long as you log into the app every three months or until you turn it off.
Your account is also viewable by anyone you message.
Your unique user ID is not visible in the app. You may share it with those you know so they may message you directly.
Pick your top three interests carefully, they will show what you're most interested in at a glance.
Interests are roughly divided into three categories: games, genres, and lifestyle. Games are named (Dungeons & Dragons), genres are generic (fantasy), and lifestyle is more nebulous such as "non-smoking" or "child friendly".
You can browse interests.
If you have suggestions for more options, share them here as well!
Availability is intended to be used as a conversation starter rather than a hard schedule. The terms "earlier" and "later" to help get things going.
Earlier is intended to be used for games that might start and end earlier in the afternoon, while later is for later in the evening.
That said, everyone is different! I've seen regular games that started at both 9am and 11pm, so talk it out, you might be surprised what people are up for.
If you favorite an LGS, other LGSs will not be displayed on your home screen.
Parties
Party listings are for individuals who want to host/run a game and for groups that are looking to add a player to their party.
Create a party listing through your profile. You do not need a "party" to create a party listing.
Be clear in your listing what game you're playing and when the game occurs. If you're looking to start a game, say if the times are negotiable.
If you wish to create a party (essentially a group chat), you do so through your profile.
Once you form a party, everyone in the party is an equal. They can add/remove others, update information for the party, schedule games, etc.
Scheduled games will send a push alert to all players an hour before the game begins.
The heat map is a place to start talking about scheduling as a group. It shows how many people are available at what time and highlights those times with the most people available.
You can use the heat map to reschedule games.
Much like availability in general, it's a conversation starter, not an exact time management tool.
The game journal is a simple tool. It's intended for the group to create an Airtable with a form that can be used to update it.
The journal shows the the game elements while the add note feature is intended for the form.
You can use any links you like, such as a document or a webpage as well.
If you create a game, these links will be displayed on the home page of the app with your next game display.
Clubs
Established and public groups can create a club.
Clubs are not limited to role-playing, any group that is frequented by RPG players is welcome, including:
Board game groups
LARP groups
TCG groups
Miniatures groups
You submit your Club application as an individual.
Must include a link to a club page such as a webpage or a social media site.
Must have a publicly listed address that is open to new people showing up unannounced.
Good club examples would include a Pokémon Club that meets weekly at the library or an Amtgard chapter that meets at a park.
A large group of board gamers or TCG players that meet at a person's house would not be a great use for this classification. Instead, post your group as a Party so you can vet new players before sharing a private address.
Clubs are verified manually, so make sure you have a good link to your organization!
Events are created through the Clubs/LGS screen and will stay public until you delete them.
Unlike LGSs, your club acts as a "party" and you can schedule games and communicate as a group. This is primarily so you can answer questions as new people find your club.
Tell your local shop!
Tavern is designed to work with your local game stores and clubs. Every day, locals in your area are talking to the staff at your local store telling them they want to connect with others in the community. Tavern makes that connection easy. It's free for the shop and free to the community and only takes a few minutes to get started!
